FRP Tanks and Resins
FRP pressure tanks for softeners, media filters and ion exchange units, and the cation, anion, mixed-bed and specialty resins that go in them, supplied across Canada and the USA.
FRP pressure tanks
FRP (fibreglass-reinforced plastic) pressure tanks are the corrosion-free vessels that hold the resin or media in water softeners, multimedia and carbon filters, and ion exchange and demineraliser units. A plastic liner wrapped in filament-wound fibreglass makes them light, strong and unaffected by brine and most water chemistry.
Tanks are usually described by diameter and height in inches: a "10 × 54" (often written 1054) tank is 10" across and 54" tall. We supply tanks for new units and to replace worn or damaged ones.
Ion exchange resins
Ion exchange resins swap unwanted ions in the water, such as hardness, alkalinity, silica or nitrate, for harmless ones, and are then regenerated with salt, acid or caustic. We supply resins for new units and for re-bedding existing softeners and demineralisers.
Strong acid cation (SAC)
Softening in the sodium form; the cation stage of demineralisation in the hydrogen form.
Weak acid cation (WAC)
Dealkalisation and removal of hardness linked to alkalinity, with efficient regeneration.
Strong base anion (SBA)
The anion stage of demineralisation, including silica and CO₂ removal.
Weak base anion (WBA)
Removes strong mineral acids after the cation stage, protecting and unloading the SBA.
Mixed bed
Cation and anion resin in one vessel for high-purity polishing after RO or two-bed demin.
Specialty resins
Selective resins for contaminants such as nitrate, plus gel and macroporous grades for tougher duties.
Sizing a softener or re-bedding a tank?
Use our ion exchange resin calculator to estimate resin volume and salt use from your flow and hardness. Leave freeboard above the resin so the bed can expand during backwash. For drinking water, ask for resins certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61.
What does a tank size like 1054 mean?
It's the tank's diameter and height in inches: a 1054 tank is 10" in diameter and 54" tall. A 1465 is 14" by 65", and so on.
How much resin fits in an FRP tank?
It depends on the tank and the freeboard the unit needs for backwash. As a common example, a 10 × 54 softener tank typically holds about 1.5 ft³ of resin. Tell us the tank and duty and we'll confirm the volume.
How often should ion exchange resin be replaced?
It depends on the water and how the unit is run. Cation softening resin often lasts many years, while anion resin and resin exposed to chlorine or organics degrades faster. Falling capacity, shorter runs and poor treated-water quality are the usual signs.
Can I re-bed my softener instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the FRP tank and control valve are in good condition, replacing just the resin (and the gravel underbed, if used) restores capacity at a fraction of the cost of a new unit.
What is NSF/ANSI/CAN 61?
NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 is the North American standard for materials in contact with drinking water. For potable water systems, choose resins and tanks certified to it.
